In this exclusive video interview learn about drummer Compton Robinson!
The first time I met Compton Robinson it was at People’s Lounge , my first impression was wow check out all them tattoos running down his Adams apples and all down his arms! Just check this kid out! I had no clue he was a musician! When the band start to assemble their equipment I watched as he set up his drums and I raised my brow. That night he performed in the group “Freddy Fuego”. I was struck by his passion for drumming, the way he wildly cris crossed his arms beating, twirling the sticks to every curve of the drums. The sweat poured down his temples, the lights mellow, the October atmosphere luke warm. He beat them drums like it was his last day on this earth in 100 degree of desert weather defeating the heat by his persistence! I enjoyed the music and began to frequent the spots he performed as well as enjoyed other talent.
It wasn’t until an abnormally warm day in February at 73 degrees in NYC that I had the chance to sit down and converse with Mr. Compton Robinson. As I walked up the subway stairs he was heading to the corner store. We were in sync and I was so relieved after the long trip to Brooklyn but it was well worth it! The two of us bought some hero sandwiches and walked baby blocks to the House of Yes located in Brooklyn N.Y. (An entertainment venue which also house a recording studio and offices of emerging fashion designers and Aerial artist). I met some of his music partners and we sat on the studios sofa as his partners edited music on software. Compton put his input as the production was in progress. The associates left and we proceeded to get down to business with this interview!
In the beginning of crafting his skills he felt like he “sucked” however after the passing of his grandfather due to cancer..devastated he became focused on the drums which gave him the opportunity to bang his frustrations out.
Compton has been on the scene since 18yrs old and only 23yrs old. Early in his music career bands that he was in included Dream first born and Army of One. He explained to me how he use to have stage fright “tinkling” a little in his pants every time when he saw the massive polished audience that had their eyes glued to the band. “People got dolled up to see you and I’m an impressionable 18-19yr old and I would loose it ..it was terrible!” Compton exclaimed with shy laughter. In time this stage fright became obsolete. I was astonished when he told me that he currently drums in Six Bands! He admits at times it can be exhausting ,but he loves every moment of it due to his passion for music. Regarding his families view of his career decision he said they “Treat him like the prodigal son”(Due to his frequent travels and coming back to the family with their open arms)”I come from the wilderness go ahead come back and it’s a celebration!” he chuckles. Then when he is more settled with the family they get on his case of why he didn’t stick to graphic design. Compton states ” They don’t see a musician making it..what is making it? Is it having a 401k and stock options or is making it developing ones self in the community around you?” Compton continues “Music can mend and inspire ones heart!” It’s been the greatest medium for him to express his emotions and talents.
We wrapped the interview up, it was a joy to learn more about this sharp, intelligent and talented young man. He knows exactly what he wants by reaching and conquering his goals, paying no mind to what people have to say about his career choices.
